Invent a memory of me and post it in the comments. It can be anything you want, so long as it's something that's never happened. Then, of course, post this to your journal and see what people would like to remember of you, only the universe failed to cooperate in making it happen so they had to make it up instead.

That coast to coast drive, you getting a couple of weeks free and things back in Carolina taken care of. That was such perfect timing, right after I got that advance cheque. Was it you or I who thought up the "rent the Jag S-type and take our time" thing?

Such fun, cruising south to stop in NO for po boys and etouffe, cutting north to see friends, back down to the south coast and into the great southwest, and that dinner, at the Bellagio buffet?

We have to do that again sometime soon.

Road trip! Taking turns driving and napping, talking about everything under the sun and complete inconsequentialities, no deadlines, no worries, no tomorrows that won't be as desultory as today.

>Road trip!

Indeed. Remember how hot Vegas seemed at first, dry desert night, and we stood in front of the lake at the Bellagio after dinner, watching the fountains dancing in front of the hotel. The music was Frank Sinatra singing "Lucky Be A Lady Tonight", and got the fine mist from the show.

And I decided I could forget I was in Las Vegas if I stayed inside the whole time we were there? I felt like an exotic fish peering out through floor to ceiling window glass at the bright lights and artificial wonders of night-time Las Vegas, and all the dry-landers on the other side.

But then it was very early, dawn the next day, and we got in the car and drove out to Red Rock Canyon, and watched wild mustangs running the hillside.

I remember visiting you right after you'd finished the new house. After you'd showed me the tub (big enough for two, with Jacuzzi jets and a full-body shower) and the kitchen, we sat down on the windowseat and looked out at your roses. We sipped our cups of tea and, for a moment, were perfectly happy.

Sitting on the rocky beach with you at Cape Reinga, at the very tip of New Zealand's North Island, watching the sun set and sipping champagne from travel mugs. There were few other people on the beach, and as the cool breeze off the water intensified, they left, one by one, until we were alone under the vast and starry sky. We'd brought candles, but the breeze was too strong to light them, so we read to each other by flashlight instead:

"Then Frodo kissed Merry and Pippin, and last of all Sam, and went aboard; and the sails were drawn up, and the wind blew, and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth; and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore glimmered and was lost. And the ship went out into the High Sea and passed on into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise."

That part always makes me cry.

And then next day we wandered in downtown Wellington, visiting museums and buying Maori carvings of bone and jade to give to people back home.

Oh, the museums were so great. And I tried to talk you into getting a Maori tattoo (and almost succeeded, too!).

It's silly, but the first thing that comes to mind is the day that I was so excited because my lilacs bloomed for the first time since I'd planted them five years before and you called me because you had a funny feeling that something good had happened to me.

And I walked you through my garden while we talked on the phone and it was - we agreed - almost as good as being there together.

I promised that one day I'd call you to tour your garden; I haven't yet. Someday.

I didn't know we'd be going sailing on Chesapeake Bay at all, but when the opportunity presented itself, you encouraged me to take it -- and I didn't have the right clothes, so you dragged out the most wonderful wool sweater that you insisted I wear -- and boy, was I glad of it, it's colder out there than I would have thought!

I think the best part was seeing the osprey nest on the buoy -- damn, that thing must have been five feet tall! And then Mama Osprey (it was a female, right? -- they're larger than the males, I know that) came home with a fish! We couldn't see the babies, but we watched her pull out shreds of flesh and do something with them, that's for sure!
