The Game of Kings -- first book in the series!

Which volume of Dorothy Dunnett's LYMOND CHRONICLES are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

Cold and rainy day today. We slept late, had some really good coffee, desultory conversation, played with the cat, and went out for Chinese food for dinner. Watched Iris on dvd, then a couple of Firefly eps on tape. He watched Discovery Wings channel: "I have always really wanted the opportunity to throw up at high altitude." Yes dear. Something I've always known about you.

L is coming to go to lunch tomorrow. Want to see her, don't necessarily want to go to lunch. I had the balls to order ice water at the VRG meeting on Thursday--nothing on the menu that a)I could eat, b)looked appetising, c)I was willing to pay their prices for. I went home afterward and had roast beef and horseradish and chopped boiled egg. They were all aghast at me not eating, but I'm really tired of everyone wanting to meet and talk over food that I feel obligated to order, would rather spend that money otherwise, and is often indifferently prepared, or contains items I shouldn't eat. Tired of it. Not doing it anymore. Will have to decide what to do about tomorrow. Also? Tired of spending $3 for a cup of frickin coffee and listening to her bitch and moan about her boring gov't job, at which she has hours of free time daily to read novels--or work on her own--and pulls down more money than I ever made in my life, or ever will. On my dime, no less.

The thing is, I understand what she means about wanting work that makes a difference, that feels fulfilling. What I don't hear following those declarations is the "I'd take a cut in pay to have the sort of job I thought meant something." But, also, warm, funny, silly, and loveable. So, I can put up with the other, for the company.
