Oh dear. You know I don't have a dog, don't you? I never feel I can live up to the look in a dog's eyes. I'm no hero.

I may be the little guy behind the hero, the one who whips the dirty cape off and replaces it with a fresh shiny new one, who mutters cues into the hero's ear at crucial times, or who makes sandwiches and coffee magically appear when they're needed and just as magically makes the detritus disappear before the room is needed again. I don't do state secrets and ideas, I do concrete gruntwork, baby. Nuts and bolts, quick and dirty, and you'll never notice me because the hero is up there with his blinding smile and his twinkling eye and easy rhetoric.

Hey, I find Allyson pretty darned heroic too. Though, I have to say I'm also glad I'm not a dog. I promise not to follow you about unthinkingly, trip you, whine for food or stick my nose in your butt. I'll just love you to bits when I can, okay? There are all different kinds of hero.

Huh. This probably ties into my deep, deep need to be, and my appreciation for the good ones, second-in-command. The human mind (mine, anyway) is a weird, weird place.
