Spoilers for SPN S3.08 below the cut.
And because
chal is both talented and generous,
I think, although it's obvious Ridge is not going to grow up to be Jensen, they cast for the hairline (cowlicks! similar!), the freckles, and most of all, the eyes. You can do that fade from Ridge's eyes to Jensen's and make you believe it's the same guy.
Colin's got Jared's eyes, or could be. But the bridge of the nose and what could mature into Sammy's caveman brow? It's there, as is an early version of *Sam's Nose*! Also, both kids have been watching the game film, because they used some mannerisms and some delivery technique. Mad props to the casting people.
Also? Necklace? Awww. Real tears, people. Real tears.
Although I know from secondhand experience that Sam's finger would be bandaged and he'd not be using that hand for much for a while. Ouchy.
The amulet reveal got the same sort of thrill reaction from me as Christian Kane's wifebeater-removal scene in Her Minor Thing on dvd the other night. Oh, not like that, you pervs. Both were completely unexpected, and beautifully presented.
But what really brought the tears was the "It's my last." "I know. That's why I can't."
These actors do so much with the barest dialog. They can just sit in the same room and not look at each other and speak volumes. It's so rare in tv, I sort of treasure every time the writers let it happen. And Sam's face, when Dean walks in, trying so hard. Wanting to make it a good memory, wanting to make his brother's last Christmas the best. These guys kill me. They just do.
