So much has happened since--so much worse--that it's sometimes difficult to remember how awful the impact of these events was. Not as much was known about Bobby at that time, either. I've been relieved and gratified to have been validated in my guesses as to Bobby's background with the Winchesters, or at least not proved wrong by canon.
