H had never seen Shogun, although he's read the Clavell books, so after we saw The Last Samurai last weekend, I Neflixed the first three Shogun discs, which turned out to be nearly seven hours of Shogun. Which we piled up on the couch together with the cat last night and watched until 1:30 AM. Interestingly, while viewed this way it has some pacing problems, mostly due to cutting to fit around commercials and in, what? two-hour, ninety minute? blocks. The music is horrible, awful. But they made some attempt to accuracy in costume and sets. The sailing ships in water footage is laughable now, especially having recently seen PotC and M&C. But on the whole, the work stands pretty well. It was groundbreaking at its time, I dimly remember, and not without cause. The final discs will be here in time for next weekend's marathon. And if it's still playing locally, we may arrange for another matinee of The Last Samurai, just for comparison's sake.

L and I are attending an Imbolc meeting tomorrow night. I should bring oatmeal cookies, but I'll probably bring apples instead since I rarely cook, and the apples are red, Bridgid's color. I'll bring bundles of home-grown herbs, along with Brother Cadfael's Herb Garden to identify and verify their medicinal uses: sage, rosemary, lavender, and some ginger root as well. The lemongrass didn't do well this year, so I have none to share. I hope I can find some good plants this spring so I can make smudging bundles next fall and share them throughout the year.
