Oooh. StY just came in from his last smoke of the evening. He was out on the deck steps with a glass of Guinness and felt a disturbance in the force--no, a *something* in the air and looked up to see a large, silent shape land in the white pine, the tallest tree in the yard. He saw the spot where it landed, and tried for several minutes to pick out its shape against the tree in the dark, with no luck. The moon tonight is behind a solid, thin overcast, so there's a diffused light. He'd almost given up when it took off again and flew directly to the left of where he was sitting.

I'm so envious. About eight years ago he was also smoking on the deck and felt something similar, but it wasn't until he heard a metallic scraping that he realized an owl had landed on the weathervane. Twice! And I've never had the privilege, though I hear them calling from the pine and from the hedgerow at the back of our property at night.

Still, it's nice to know they're out there. This one had a wingspan of at least four feet, StY says.
